“Stop that,” Draco said, sharp and tired. “You most certainly are not. And you shall not go on with such ridiculous excuses if you want to spend time with me.”

Harry looked up, confused.

Draco narrowed his eyes. “Who says you are stupid, Professor?”

“You want a list?” Harry snapped.

“Snape is long dead,” Draco countered, but more cautiously this time.

“He is,” Harry agreed, and brought a hand up to his temple. “Look, I don’t want to argue about this. You’re right that I’m not actually a full-on idiot, but I’m right that interpersonal stuff isn’t a… strong suit.”

“Fair enough,” Draco said, sounding more sincere than Harry would have expected. “I accept your apology. Your apologies. And the gift.” He ducked his head briefly, then looked up to catch Harry’s eyes. “The mobile truly is a remarkably thoughtful present. I do understand that.”

“Then I should start showing you how to use it,” Harry said. “Er, right?”

“Go on,” Draco said, with a soft smile on his face that Harry didn’t think he had ever seen before. “I’ll need you to hurry. I am quite looking forward to gossiping with Pansy about what an utter numpty you are.”

At that Harry looked up sharply, but Draco’s eyes were sparkling with a gentle mirth, and Harry relaxed, confident that Draco was merely ribbing him.

“So,” he said, feeling more assured than he had since arriving at Draco’s door, “this button turns the mobile on….”

Once Draco had successfully called Harry’s mobile with a regular audio-only connection, and then once again with a video-call, he declined to learn about the other bells and whistles his new toy boasted. “I can learn card games tomorrow,” Draco said, pushing him toward the door. “You should go. I have phone calls to make.”

Harry shuffled down the hallway toward the stairs. That went well, in the end. He’s pretty sure. But they should have hashed things out before he’d gone. He mustn’t vanish again, but how long apart constitutes “vanishing”? Two days — obviously, but one? Half a day? If he never leaves Draco alone the man will get quite sick of him. On the other hand, they live in the same castle, take all their meals in the same Great Hall, and have a similar lack of classes or other distractions.

Harry wishes he could be certain what it all adds up to.
