“You are asking me to betray my father, Potter,” Draco said quietly.
“Because if the Wizengamot think you’re still loyal to him then that Dark Mark sends you straight to Azkaban,” Harry said desperately. He had been trying to get Draco to see sense for some time. They were in a tiny DMLE interview room, Draco’s trial imminent. “You need to convince them that you were only acting under his influence, coerced against your will.”
Harry took a calming breath. “I’m trying to help you, Malfoy.”
“Why though? I thought you’d be chief witness for the prosecution.”
Because, Harry thought, you’re scared to death and I have a sneaking admiration for your defiance, your misplaced loyalty. Because more than anything I want to take you in my arms and kiss you until our ears pop.
Aloud he said, “Because you couldn’t kill Dumbledore when it came to it. Because he wanted to help you, thought you could be saved.”
Draco gave a mirthless, derisory laugh. “And you say I’m foolishly loyal. Give it up, Potter, not even you can save everyone.”
Harry sighed. “Maybe not,” he said, “but that won’t stop me trying.”
