Draco lies in bed, listening to the sounds of the house. Harry’s footsteps along the floorboards in the rooms below are a familiar sound, like listening for a heartbeat that you know is there.
Draco’s tired. It’s not with lack of sleep, or even the drifting sense of being at loose ends, though he is that too. His body feels out of step with the rest of him, like so much skin and bone, held to his sense of self with fraying threads.
“Are you still sleeping?” Harry murmurs at the door.
Draco shakes his head, but he’s not sure.
