“I simply don’t understand why you put up with it, Harry. This is the third time he’s cheated on you.”
It was the fifth time that Draco had been unfaithful, but Harry didn’t correct Hermione. Instead, he said, “It’s not really cheating if he doesn’t hide it.”
Hermione gave an exasperated sigh. “Why would he bother when you just accept it. And he never shows any remorse for hurting you! If you were happy with an open relationship then fair enough, but you’re miserable. You need to tell him that it has to stop.”
“Seriously Draco,” Pansy snapped, “this ridiculous plan of yours to provoke Potter into declaring his feelings for you clearly isn’t working. I’m running out of people I can convince to pretend they’ve slept with you. Blaise refused point blank, although Daphne did say her sister might be up for it.”
Draco looked thoroughly woebegone, but Pansy felt no remorse for scolding him, it was past time for this nonsense to stop.
“Just talk to him,” she said in a gentler tone. “Tell him how you feel. Surely it’s better to know one way or the other?”
It was a week before Hermione saw Harry again. She was feeling a certain amount of remorse for having been so unsympathetic about Draco’s serial infidelity, but finding herself alone in a lift with him she didn’t hesitate to ask. “Well, how did it go?” she said. “Did you tell Draco he can’t keep treating you so badly?”
“Yes.” Harry paused, still slightly bemused by Draco’s extraordinary confession, which he felt sure Hermione wouldn’t believe. “It’s all sorted. In fact,” he held out his left hand, a gargantuan diamond on his third finger. “We’re engaged!”
