My dear, precious Draco,

Apparently, I need to be fully, transparently clear that I will not tolerate your insults to gay men. My favourite cousin, Sirius Black, was homosexual. He was brave to the point of being occasionally foolhardy, but no one could ever have fairly called him cowardly.

As a very feminine woman, I find the use of that term equated to an insult to be distressing.

I will not even dignify the use of the insult “gross” by explaining why it will never again be used to describe any human being to me. I assume that is self-evident.

If you cannot bear to share a simple hour of tea and scones with your ex-lover I will take Boxing Day tea at Harry’s home, instead. I saved his life. He had already saved yours. This tea will happen.

Your father is no longer in charge of your decisions, Draco. No matter whom you eventually choose to marry, I will give my blessing as long as he or she is kind, smart, and loves you as you deserve to be loved: fully and enthusiastically.

To be clear, you are still much too young to get married.

Dare I say that Draco will let his mother take tea with Harry alone. I think he needs a lot more time to come to terms with himself, to be swayed by a simple letter.

I like Narcissa's letter, but she has raised her son in Pureblood tradition and thus has made the mistake to let Lucius ingrain in her son these feelings. Does she really expect to change Draco's perception in one letter?

I like this complex universe, where not everything is so clear as "they fell in love and happy ever after" it seems that just because the war is over, it does not mean the war inside of them is.

One letter? Oh, I hardly think this is where she began. Narcissa has been trying to counteract Lucius' influence since before Draco was born. She just didn't have the cachet, or the microphone. (As it were. Maybe the Sonorus.)

Anyway, like me at 18, like my kids now, maybe even like you once upon a teenage time, Draco isn't very good at listening to his mother. But Narcissa isn't giving up any time soon.

But the thing is, trying to counteract it but still letting it happen. If she would have been really against the mindset that Lucius installed in her son, she could have done more. Of course I can only go from what I see from Draco but he does not display any indication that one part of his family has lived as an example of tolerance and acceptance.

I always had a very strong connection to my parents, so not listening to their opinions was never really an issue. My mother once told me "There is no sense in trying to raise a child in a certain way, they copy us anyways" so I'll go by that :) They were such good examples for me, that I didn't need active "Erziehung" which is the German word I think "raising" is the best translation.

I look forward to the next installments, since Draco does need to grow more into himself, and I am really curious how you will further develop the boys.

She wasn't raising Draco alone. She had a husband, with whom she often disagreed, but with whom she wanted to maintain a peaceful home and a decent relationship. She walked a tightrope and she did the best she could. Now she can speak her mind far more bluntly, and she does.

And I envy you that upbringing. It isn't common, in my experience.
